On Thursday night, three MVPs were unanimously honored. One of them happened to be for the Most Valuable Pup.
Shohei Ohtani won the American League MVP award for the second time in his career, but the furry companion seated behind him as he heard the announcement definitely stole the show.
Ohtani offered his cute pet food and head scratches while answering questions about yet another extraordinary season, which garnered him an honor that was no real surprise to BBWAA voters. Ohtani, like his NL counterpart, garnered 30 first-place votes, making him the first player in MLB history to win a unanimous MVP award twice.
Ohtani gave his dog a sincere high five after Hall of Famer Reggie Jackson revealed the two-way unicorn as the winner. This dog is probably blissfully ignorant of its owner’s 11.4 K/9 in 2023. And whether it follows in the footsteps of Ohtani as a two-way dog capable of catching and retrieving a tennis ball remains to be seen, but one thing is certain. This dog won Best in Show on Thursday night.
