Justin Jefferson, a wide receiver for the Minnesota Vikings, reportedly said that before quarterback Kirk Cousins began playing their music in the locker room, he had never heard of the band Creed. Jefferson said with a laugh that the only “creed” he knew was from the boxing movie when asked if he had grown up to be a fan of the character. According to Ben Goessling of the Star Tribune, Cousins appears to have been controlling the music scene in the Vikings locker room with Creed’s songs.
After the Vikings defeated the 49ers 22–17 in Week 7, cousins started the Creed movement in the locker room. The group let loose with the band’s smash song “Higher” as they celebrated their victory. Although they mentioned that Creed has many other songs, they have been especially enamoured with “Higher” since it corresponds with their recent achievements on the field.
It’s interesting to note that the Texas Rangers’ first World Series victory and the Vikings’ renewed affection for Creed happened at the same time. Prior to their triumphant Fall Classic earlier this month, the Rangers were well-known for playing Creed music in their dugout. The Rangers’ fan base even demonstrated this enthusiasm by singing “Higher” during Game 3 of the ALCS against the Houston Astros. During that game, Scott Stapp and the band came to support the Rangers.
Ironically, it appears that the Vikings’ love of Creed music is working in their favour. The team has won two straight since Josh Dobbs replaced the injured Kirk Cousins as the starting quarterback. Jefferson, meanwhile, has missed the last four games due to a hamstring issue. I hope he gets better soon so he can enjoy the music of the legendary rock band to the fullest.
