Reds outfielder receives down-ballot vote for National League MVP award

Ronald Acuña Jr., an outfielder for the Atlanta Braves, had a fantastic season and was voted the 2023 National League Most Valuable Player on Thursday night.

The outfielder from Atlanta topped the Senior Circuit in runs, hits, on-base percentage, and OPS. He also hit 41 home runs and swiped 73 bases.

Acuña and Mookie Betts of the Los Angeles Dodgers dominated the conversation about the NL MVP, but one outfielder from the Cincinnati Reds was given a second look at the award.

In 2023, centerfielder T.J. Friedl, who hit.279/.352/.467 with 18 home runs, 27 stolen bases, and 73 runs scored, was a major catalyst at the top of the Reds’ lineup.

Friedl was the only member of the Cincinnati Reds to vote for the MVP award, casting one vote in the 10th spot.

Nick Castellanos, a former outfielder with the Reds, received one vote for MVP in the tenth spot following his 29-home run season with the Phillies.

Due to their contributions to Cincinnati’s unexpected 82-80 season, three Cincinnati Reds players were also voted for National League Rookie of the Year earlier this week.

Restrictions on burning are in place at Daniel Boone National Forest due to the drought in eastern Kentucky.

Matt McLain, the Reds’ top bat (.290) and OPS (.864), infielder, garnered one vote for second place and two votes for third place.

Electric shortstop Elly De La Cruz, who shocked many in the baseball world with his enormous power, blazing speed, and lightning arm in the field, was the third and final Reds player to be considered for Rookie of the Year.

De La Cruz scored 67 runs, stole 35 bases, and hit 13 home runs in 98 games. As the season came to an end, the 21-year-old also had a great deal of difficulty at times; he finished with 144 strikeouts while hitting just.200 after August 1. One vote went to De La Cruz in third place.
