Possibilities of a trade involving the Rays’ Margot Manuel

Outfielder Manuel Margot of the Rays is among the players most likely to be traded this winter. At least five teams, including the Mets and the Yankees, have inquired about him.

When Tampa Bay made the experienced right-handed batter available for trade at the trade deadline, the Yankees renewed their chase of him.

However, a deal involving Margot is expected to take place this summer.

Margot is due $10 million in 2024, the highest amount for a position player in Tampa Bay at the moment, and the Rays need to cut salaries.

His other options include a $2 million buyout in 2025 or a $12 million option.

With Jose Siri in center and Randy Arozarena and Josh Lowe as backups, he is not a core player for Tampa Bay.

Margot, who celebrated her 29th birthday in September, is an auxiliary component.

Despite his defensive and running skills, he has only managed one above-average OPS+ thus far in his career (in 2022).

If the Yankees are unable to acquire left-handed hitters and top-tier defenders like Cody Bellinger or Kevin Kiermaier, Margot might serve as a backup center fielder.
