Skip Schumaker of the Miami Marlins was chosen as the 2023 National League Manager of the Year, taking home the trophy for the first time in his professional career. Dave Roberts, the manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers, finished in fifth place with 41 points after receiving 15 votes overall.
Roberts received four votes in the top spot, five in second, and six in third. In addition to winning NL Manager of the Year in 2016, he has finished as a finalist twice more, coming in second in 2017 and 2022.
Buck Showalter of the New York Mets, the champion of the previous season, was not a finalist for 2023. After a dismal season for the Mets, Showalter was let go at the start of October.
With 51 points, new Chicago Cubs manager Craig Counsell came in second for 2023 NL Manager of the Year. Brian Snitker, manager of the Atlanta Braves, was a fellow finalist who finished third with 48 points. In 2018, Snitker was the winner.
It was unexpected that Roberts did not receive enough recognition to be considered a finalist for Manager of the Year, even with another disappointing postseason campaign (which is not taken into account for determining Baseball Writers’ Association of America honours).
Numerous forecasters predicted that the Dodgers would not even win 100 games, let alone defeat the San Diego Padres in the NL West. In addition to winning the division for the tenth time in the previous eleven seasons, the Dodgers also overcame a slew of injuries and outside distractions.
The Dodgers are the only club to have at least 100 victories in three straight seasons and four straight complete seasons. They started their run in 2019 with 106 wins, which at the time was a franchise record. They matched that feat in 2021, and then in 2022, they broke the record with 111 wins.
The only year over that span that the Dodgers failed to win 100 games was 2020, when the team finished with 43 victories due to the coronavirus pandemic that restricted the season to 60 games. Their 116 wins per 162 games corresponded to a winning percentage of 716.
Regarding the Dodgers possibly reaching 100 wins in 2023, Roberts previously stated, “I think our expectation was to win the division, but given the division and the talent, the parity as far as the balanced schedule, it was hard to foresee this.”
particularly in light of everything we had to endure. Glad for our guys.
Roberts has managed the Dodgers to an MLB-best 753-442 record throughout his time there. Only Hall of Famer Bullet Rogan (.698 over five seasons), Vic Harris (.663 over 11 seasons), and Hall of Famer Rube Foster (.633 over seven seasons) have a higher win-loss percentage than him. His current mark is the fourth-best in MLB history.
Only Dusty Baker has managed more October baseball games than Roberts, who is now ranked ninth among active managers with 45 postseason victories and a.536 winning percentage.
In the eight seasons that Roberts has managed the Dodgers, the team has made it to the postseason seven times, won three pennants, one World Series, and seven NL West championships.
Roberts became the manager with the longest tenure in the National League with his present team when Counsell left the Milwaukee Brewers to join the Cubs.
Dave Roberts is back as manager of the Dodgers.Despite the Dodgers’ second straight loss in the NL Division Series, president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman reaffirmed his long-standing faith in Roberts and announced that he would stay manager through the 2024 campaign.
