Two of the Yankees’ top-30 prospects are safe from the Rule 5 draft

The Rule 5 Draft protections for the New York Yankees were made on Tuesday, one month before the winter meetings in Nashville.

Six of the Yankees’ top 30 prospects on MLB.com were among those eligible for protection.

Right-handed pitcher Clayton Beeter was ranked number 16, followed by second baseman/shortstop Jared Serna at number 20, catcher Agustin Ramirez at number 24, right-handed pitcher Matt Sauer at number 25, right-handed pitcher Edgar Barclay at number 28, and outfielder Elijah Dunham at number 30.

Two of those players, Beeter and Ramirez, were announced to be safeguarded by the Yankees. They are now one of the team’s 40 active players. As for the remainder, they won’t be shielded from the Rule 5 Draft.

Some of the players involved in the transactions could end up being crucial for the Yankees’ long-term success.

Outfielder Jasson Dominguez was promoted from the minors late last season, but he will miss all of 2019 after tearing the UCL in his throwing arm and requiring Tommy John surgery.

The Yankees have decided to keep Aaron Boone as manager through 2024, while Carlos Mendoza, who had been serving as bench coach, has left for the rival Mets. However, the Yankees did announce that James Rowson would be taking over for Sean Casey as hitting coach.

The Yankees didn’t select a Rule 5 player last year, but they did lose two to other teams in the draft: pitcher Zach Greene (to the Mets, who returned him to the Yankees in March) and pitcher Wilking Rodriguez (to the Cardinals).

On December 6th, Nashville will host the Rule 5 Draft, often known as the Winter Meeting Draft.

Players eligible for protection were those who had signed as amateurs and had not been added to the 40-man roster within five seasons of becoming a professional, or those who had signed as amateurs and had not been added to the 40-man roster within four seasons.

Teams who select players in the Rule 5 Draft are obligated to pay the player’s club $100,000, add the player to their 25-man roster immediately, and place the player on outright waivers if they wish to trade or release him. If he gets through waivers, his former team can claim him back for $50,000.
