Orioles’ Gunnar Henderson named 2023 AL Rookie of the Year

The Baltimore Orioles’ Gunnar Henderson was unanimously chosen as the 2023 American League Jackie Robinson Rookie of the Year on Monday night.

The winner was revealed on MLB Network after votes from the Baseball Writers’ Association of America (BBWAA) were cast.

Henderson played a major part in the Orioles’ march to 101 wins and the AL East title. The 22-year-old hit 28 home runs with his bat.With 150 games played, 255/.325/.489.

He topped all AL rookies in extra-base hits (65), runs scored (99), home runs, and RBI (82).

With all 30 first-place votes, the six-foot-two infielder became the 13th athlete to win the award unanimously.

Tanner Bibee of the Cleveland Guardians and Triston Casas of the Boston Red Sox were the other two nominees for the award.

Bibee finished in second place with 20 votes, followed by 7 in third.

The Minnesota Twins’ Edouard Julien, a Canadian infielder, finished seventh overall with two votes for third place.

Henderson was chosen as the AL Silver Slugger award winner for the utility position. The 22-year-old played 83 games at third base and 84 at shortstop.

As the sixth Oriole to win Rookie of the Year, he joined Gregg Olson (1989), Cal Ripken Jr. (1982), Eddie Murray (1977), Al Bumbry (1973), Curt Blefary (1965), and Ron Hansen (1960).

Henderson, a second-round pick in 2019 out of John T. Morgan Academy in Selma, Alabama, debuted with Baltimore in 2022, playing in 34 games and slashing.259/.348/.440.

Starting on Monday, the MLB BBWAA awards were revealed for the first time in the previous four days. The Cy Young will be awarded on Wednesday, the MVP on Thursday, and the Manager of the Year on Tuesday.
