Cincinnati Reds’ Interested in Surprising Free Agent This OffseasonThe Cincinnati Reds are reportedly interested in free agent infielder Jeimer Candelario this offseason.
According to a report from Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the Cincinnati Reds are interested in free agent infielder Jeimer Candelario this offseason.
Jeimer Candelario has interest from the Diamondbacks, Reds and Angels. …
We also recently heard that the Toronto Blue Jays have interest in the veteran.
This is a bit of a curious pairing for the Reds, who are loaded with position players and really need pitchers. The team has Noelvi Marte, Elly De La Cruz, Jonathan India, Spencer Steer, Matt McLain and Christian Encarnacion-Strand who can play infield.
Of course, Joey Votto won’t be back with the Reds next season after having his option declined last weekend. Perhaps Candelario could slide in at first base instead of his usual third base, but both Steer and Encarnacion-Strand can play there too.
The soon-to-be 30-year-old played for the Nationals and Cubs this past season, hitting .251 with 22 homers and 70 RBI. He also stole eight bases.
Candelario just finished his eighth year in the big leagues with the Cubs, Tigers, and Nationals.
Lifetime, he’s a .243 hitter with 88 homers and 318 RBI. He became a solid regular in 2017 when he led the American League in doubles with 42.
As for cost? It’s not really known yet what Candelario will fetch on the open market. In comparison to Matt Chapman at third base, he should make considerably less, but if the Reds plan to use him at first base, it’s unknown how that will affect his earning potential.
