By November 6th, the Los Angeles Dodgers had to choose which six players’ 2024 contract options to accept. Max Muncy was one of them, with a $14 million club option for the following season
Ultimately, a two-year, $24 million contract extension between the two parties was worked out, keeping Muncy in Los Angeles through at least 2025. A $10 million club option is also included in his contract for the 2026 campaign.
Muncy’s salary for the upcoming season will now be $2 million less than what he would have received had his 2024 club option been exercised.
In an interview with MLB Network’s “High Heat,” Muncy said he decided not to play anyplace else, thus he signed a team-friendly contract with the Dodgers:
Being a part of an organisation like that gives me peace of mind. They assisted me in rediscovering my passion for baseball when I initially returned here a number of years ago. and the knowledge that we always have an opportunity to win and that it’s a place where we feel at ease. Here, my family and I feel at ease. For us, it was simply a no-brainer.
“We were never in it to make the most money; we were in it to win a lot of World Series, and that’s the whole reason I fell back in love with baseball.” Furthermore, I believed that Los Angeles offered us the best opportunity available. Thus, it was the one that seemed the most comfortable to me.
After an unusual 2023 season in which he hit just.212 but blasted 36 home missiles and drove in 105 RBI—both career highs—Muncy is coming off a strange season. He joined Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman, and J.D. Martinez as the only Dodgers to attain the 30-home run and 100 RBI milestones.
Four separate Dodgers players reached those totals in the same season for the first time in the team’s history.
Muncy is one of the four third base finalists for the National League’s 2023 Silver Slugger Award. Austin Riley (Atlanta Braves), Manny Machado (San Diego Padres), and Nolan Arenado (St. Louis Cardinals) are his rivals.
Max Muncy stands out in the Dodgers’ selection of contract optionsMuncy was the only player signed to an extension by the Dodgers, but he was locked up for at least the next two seasons. The Dodgers also exercised Blake Treinen’s $1 million 2024 club option.
In the meantime, the team passed on Alex Reyes, Joe Kelly, Daniel Hudson, and Lance Lynn’s options. Now that they are all free agents, the players can still sign new contracts with the Dodgers under various conditions.
