What’s the significance of Luka Doncic wearing number 77?

Slovenian basketball sensation Luka Doncic has been making waves in the NBA and capturing the attention of some of the league’s most renowned players.

Since his debut with the Dallas Mavericks in 2018, Doncic has sported the No. 77 jersey, a choice that carries deep significance. In a press conference held in July 2021, the 23-year-old offered insight into his decision to don the No. 77.

He disclosed that his choice pays tribute to one of his idols, Vassilis Spanoulis, a Greek professional basketball player who previously wore the No. 7 jersey before retiring. Speaking about the influence of his teammates, Doncic mentioned, “Obviously, Felipe Reyes was my teammate, and he taught me well. He was the veteran over there, and he won almost everything.”

Continuing on the topic of Spanoulis, he noted, “Spanoulis was my idol since I was little. I was watching him. It was kind of sad seeing him retiring. That’s why I wear No. 7. I mean, I couldn’t wear No. 7 because it was already taken, so I took 77. He was really, really big time for me.”

It’s worth noting that Doncic also proudly sports the No. 77 jersey while representing Slovenia in international competitions.
