Shohei Ohtani, Major League Baseball’s most successful two-way player, is currently playing at the top level. He was named the American League Outstanding Player in the 2023 Players Choice Awards.
He was nominated for the award alongside Yandy Daz (Tampa Bay Rays) and Corey Seager (Texas Rangers), but was declared the AL champion.
Ohtani led the league in on-base plus slugging (1.066), home runs (44), RBI (95), steals (20), and batting average (.304). Over 23 starts, he finished 10-5 with a 3.14 ERA, 1.06 WHIP, and 167 strikeouts.
His stronghold on the league lead in combined WAR will be his to lose because of his ability to hit and pitch. He is now projected to win the AL Most Valuable Player award in 2023, his second in his career after winning unanimously in 2021.
Shohei Ohtani has been selected a Silver Slugger finalist.
Ohtani is on pace to win his second consecutive AL MVP award. He also has a Silver Slugger Award and is the first Japanese player to lead his league in home runs.
Ohtani is the designated hitter nominee and the odds-on favorite to win. The two-way standout was restricted by injuries down the stretch, but he appears to have enough to edge over Yordan Alvarez, who had a very good season with the Houston Astros.
From veteran players with many Silver Slugger medals to emerging rookies looking for their first, here are the contenders for the award at each position in 2023. The winners will be announced on MLB Network on Thursday, November 9 at 6 p.m. ET.
