Tyler Cyr was outrighted to Triple-A Oklahoma City by the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday, eliminating him from their 40-man roster. Cyr cleared waivers in a transaction that was not previously publicized, which prompted the action.
It’s noteworthy that Cyr left the Dodgers’ 40-man roster because free agency is scheduled to open the morning following the World Series. This will also begin the countdown on the Dodgers’ need to decide what to do with the six players who have 2024 contract options.
In order to avoid losing players in the Rule 5 draft, the organization will also need to add qualified Minor Leaguers to their 40-man roster later in November and tender contracts to arbitration-eligible players.
The Dodgers now anticipate having 33 players on their 40-man roster when free agency starts. That does, however, include the six players who have a contract option for the next year.
Cyr will be able to choose to sign as a minor league free agent. He signed a Minor League contract this past January, which included an invitation to spring training despite not being on the roster.
The San Francisco Giants selected Cyr in the tenth round of the 2015 MLB Draft. In November 2021, he was allowed free agency and signed a contract with the Philadelphia Phillies.
In 2022, Cyr made his Major League Baseball (MLB) debut with the Phillies. However, he only made one appearance before being designated for assignment the next day, in accordance with Philadelphia’s decision to choose Michael Plassmeyer’s contract.
Cyr was claimed off waivers by the Oakland Athletics, who gave him greater opportunities. In 11 games for the A’s, the 29-year-old went 1-0 with a 2.08 ERA, 3.04 FIP, and 1.08 WHIP. During his tenure in Oakland, Cyr managed to have a strikeout percentage of 30.8%.
Tyler Cyr’s Dodgers stats
Despite having trouble with Oklahoma City, Cyr made two appearances in May and tossed 1.2 scoreless innings for the Dodgers. But on May 23 (retroactive to May 21), he was later put on the 15-day disabled list due to a right shoulder impingement.
Three days later, Cyr was moved to the 60-day injured list. He didn’t pitch again until August, and even then, he only made four appearances, split between the OKC and Arizona Complex League (ACL) Dodgers.
