New England basketball has enjoyed a fantastic week with the Boston Celtics securing a 3-0 record, and the state of Maine’s own Cooper Flagg deciding to commit to the Duke Blue Devils on Monday.
Flagg, the nation’s top-ranked high school boys’ basketball player, opted for Duke over UConn, the reigning NCAA champions, a choice that thrilled Celtics star Jayson Tatum.
Tatum, who himself attended Duke for a season, had an impressive run, averaging 16.8 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 1.3 steals per game during his time there. Subsequently, the Celtics selected Tatum as the third overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft.
When asked about Flagg’s decision, Tatum expressed his enthusiasm and unwavering loyalty to his alma mater, as reported by Jay King of The Athletic.
Tatum remarked, “It was great… [Flagg’s] a remarkable player. He’s destined for the league soon. I’m happy for him and his family. Obviously, I’m happy for Duke, but it’s almost a no-brainer. That’s where all the best players go.”
