The Los Angeles Dodgers and the newly established Taiwanese Professional Baseball League (CPBL) All-Star squad started a three-game Friendship Series on October 29, 1993.
There were twenty-five players on the Dodgers roster for the exhibition series, including future Cy Young Award winner Pedro Martínez, Cy Young Award winner Orel Hershiser, and former Rookie of the Year winners Eric Karros, Mike Piazza, and Raul Mondesi.
Tommy Lasorda, the future Hall of Fame manager of the Dodgers, traveled to Taiwan with Ben Hines, the hitting coach, and Ron Perranoski, the pitching coach. In addition, Dodgers photographer Jon SooHoo went on the trip with the team as Vin Scully was scheduled to commentate on the series.
With four innings pitched and two runs (one earned) given up by Martínez, the Dodgers prevailed 4-2 in the first game of the series. Piazza scored two runs and went 2-for-3 with a home run.
In a match that was settled on the tenth, the CPBL won Game 2 1-0 in the end. In 9.1 innings pitched, Tom Candiotti, Roger McDowell, and Steve Wilson combined to give up just one run on seven hits.
The CPBL then defeated the Dodgers 6-5 in the rubber game to take the series. Jonathan Hurst failed to record an out while giving up four runs.
The Dodgers went 81-81 and placed fourth in the National League West division during the 1993 MLB season. They lost seven of their remaining ten scheduled games to end the season.
