The odds that the Red Sox will sign a major free agent this winter are high

The Boston Red Sox have finally appointed new leadership in the front office, so significant changes are anticipated this summer.

Boston will make a big splash or two after a few lean years to kickstart the retooling process. The world’s top player might be a possibility.

According to reports, Jon Heyman of the New York Post has put the Red Sox in the mix for the forthcoming Shohei Ohtani sweepstakes.

“The New Balance link has folks speculating Boston,” Heyman wrote on Thursday. He clearly enjoys playing there, and it can’t be fun for them to have lost three of the last four seasons. Odds: 10-1.”

According to Heyman, Ohtani will still be able to negotiate a contract worth at least $500 million, and he has even heard that a deal worth $600 million is possible. Although that’s a huge sum, Ohtani is probably worth it.

Ohtani played in 135 games this year, batting.304 with 78 extra-base hits (44 home runs included), 95 runs batted in (RBIs), and an OPS of 1.066.

In 132 innings in 23 stаrts, he hаԀ а 10-5 recоrԀ, 3.14 ERа, 167-tо-55 K/BB rаtiо,.184 Bаа аgаinst, аnԀ 1.061 WHIP.

Since the Jаpаnese аce will miss аll оf 2024 with аn elbоw injury, the ReԀ Sоx will hаve tо put their pursuit оf him оn hоlԀ while they fоcus оn аcquiring sоme tоp-tier stаrters.

But there’s also a scenario in which Boston signs Ohtani and then looks to fill out its rotation with lower-tier players like Eduardo Rodriguez and Sonny Gray, who is set to become a free agent after this season with the Minnesota Twins.

After a couple disappointing seasons, Ohtani would need a strong push from ownership to land in Boston. The group’s desperation level after yet another last-place finish in the young American League East will determine the outcome.
