According to the New York Post, Carlos Mendoza, the bench boss of the New York Yankees, is among the candidates being considered to succeed Terry Francona as manager of the Cleveland Indians.
Post tweeted a list of contenders, which included Mendoza, Steven Vogt (manager of the Mariners), Craig Albernaz (manager of the Giants), Carlos Mendoza (manager of the Yankees), Andy Green (manager of the Cubs), and Craig Counsell (manager of the Brewers), who will be unemployed as of November 1.
Mendoza applied for the vacant manager position with the Chicago White Sox last summer, but Pedro Grifol was hired instead.
If the Yankees were to let Mendoza go, he would be the team’s second non-returning coach from the 2023 season’s final roster. Hitting coach Sean Casey, who took over midway through the season, announced his departure from the position for the 2024 season earlier this month.
Since taking over for Josh Bard before the 2020 season, Yankees bench coach is now Mendoza. Prior to that, he worked for the Yankees as a quality control and infield coach. He has spent the last eleven years working with the Yankees.
He has also worked for the Yankees’ minor league clubs, the Gulf Coast League Yankees in 2011 and the Charleston River Dogs in 2012. Thereafter, he worked as a mobile infield coach.
Counsell is the clear frontrunner in any search for a new manager. Counsell may wind up with the New York Mets because of his relationship with David Stearns, the Mets’ new president of baseball operations.
