The 2023 season demonstrated beyond a shadow of a doubt that the Yankees, in their current form, cannot win games regularly without Aaron Judge. They had a 57-49 record with Judge on the field and a 25-31 record without him.

Even though Judge was nearly as prolific as his record-setting 2022 campaign, the Yankees were hampered by the fact that they were forced to play 56 games without him this season due to his two trips to the injured list. The loss of the league’s MVP would have been catastrophic for any team, but the Yankees in particular.

Judge was a 140-150 wRC+ hitter from 2018-2021. However, he has taken on greater leadership responsibilities in the locker room (as the new captain) and boosted his potential during the past two seasons.

The Captain has been unstoppable ever since his triumphant return on July 28 and continuing to the end of the season.a 164 wRC+ on a slash line of 245/408/557. It’s natural for Yankees fans to speculate on what his career statistics may have been like if he hadn’t been injured. Up until that time, he was on fire and was crushing the ball.

Overall, Judge had another MVP-caliber season, but he didn’t play enough to win the award. Even though he was probably going to lose to Shohei Ohtani this year, he could have come quite close if he hadn’t gotten hurt in early June. An “A” on the exam was well merited by him.

The Yankees’ inability to replace Judge for any length of time highlights serious flaws in their approach to roster construction. They’ll need their captain to play in close to 150 games in 2024 if they hope to make the playoffs again.
