It’s possible that the New York Yankees will look for a new closer during the offseason.
It’s expected that the Big Apple would use the offseason to become resourceful. They have a long way to go after winning just 82 games in 2023. The Yankees have been mentioned in connection with some potential free agent superstars. Cody Bellinger, an outfielder for the Chicago Cubs, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, an ace for the Orix Buffaloes, and Juan Soto, a star for the San Diego Padres, are just a few of the names that have been linked to New York.
The Yankees will aim to strengthen the team all around, and their bullpen may not be immune to further reinforcements. According to Yahoo Japan, New York has expressed interest in Yuki Matsui, the closer for the Tohoko Rakuten Golden Eagles.
After 10 years with the Golden Eagles of the Nippon Professional Baseball League, Matsui is apparently ready to make the step to Major League Baseball. With 236 saves in his career, he is among the finest closers in the league. Over the course of his decade-long career, Matsui has amassed a 2.43 earned run average.
The Yankees have been listed as one of the major league organizations that have scouted Matsui, though the extent of their interest in the left-hander is unknown. The Chicago Cubs, the St. Louis Cardinals, and the Boston Red Sox were all mentioned.
The Big Apple might be a fascinating match. With a 3.34 team ERA in 2023, the Yankees’ bullpen was the best in MLB. There will undoubtedly be some changes, but the core of the bullpen should remain the same. The Yankees’ chances of winning the World Series would improve significantly if they signed Matsui.
