In Game 7 of the National League Championship Series at Citizens Bank Park, the Arizona Diamondbacks defeated the Philadelphia Phillies, punching their ticket to the World Series and a battle with the Texas Rangers.
Before winning two straight games on the road, the Diamondbacks fell behind the Phillies 3-2 in the series. Similar to the Fall Classic, the Rangers’ journey began with a 3-2 deficit against the Houston Astros and ended with two straight victories at Minute Maid Park.
The Houston Astros and Los Angeles Dodgers’ World Series winning streak has ended. Neither of the teams is present in the Fall Classic for the first time since 2017.
The Astros represented the American League in 2017, 2019, 2021, and 2022, while the Dodgers appeared in 2017, 2018, and 2020.
Dodgers against the Astros in the 2017 World Series
In seven games, the Astros overcame the Dodgers to capture their first-ever championship. At the time, the game was regarded as one of the greatest in MLB history, but Houston’s sign-stealing controversy has since overshadowed it.
Dodgers versus Red Sox in the 2018 World Series
In 2018, the Boston Red Sox, who won an MLB-high 108 games, defeated the Dodgers in their return to the Fall Classic. The Red Sox were ultimately discovered to have unlawfully stolen signs during their World Series run, much like the Astros in 2017.
2019 World Series matchup: Astros vs. Nationals
For the first time in two years, the Astros returned to the World Series, but they were defeated in seven games by the Washington Nationals. The Nationals won their first championship in team history after winning two away elimination games.
Additionally, during the series, the Nationals and Astros each won just one game on the road.
2020 World Series: Rays versus Dodgers
During the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, the Dodgers had the best record in all of baseball. They went on to upset the Tampa Bay Rays in six games to capture their first championship since 1988.
Future Series: Braves vs. Astros in 2021
The Atlanta Braves finished the regular season with just 88 wins, but they won a pennant over the Astros in six games by playing their best ball when it mattered most.
2022 World Series: Phillies vs. Astros
After sweeping the Phillies in six games to win their second World Series title in team history, the Astros advanced through the postseason by sweeping the Seattle Mariners and New York Yankees in the first two rounds.
