The Los Angeles Dodgers are an organization with a rich history of trailblazing, dating back to the team’s Brooklyn days
Former Brooklyn Dodgers president Branch Rickey announces Jackie Robinson and Johnny Wright’s agreements on October 23, 1945. Both athletes joined the league’s Triple-A team in Montreal, and on April 15, 1947, Robinson became the first black player in Major League Baseball history, breaking color barriers.
During his ten seasons with the Dodgers, Robinson hit a career.311/.409/.474 with 273 doubles, 54 triples, 137 home runs, and 734 RBI. In addition to adding 197 stolen bases, he assisted Brooklyn in winning their only World Series in 1955.
During his MVP campaign in 1949, Robinson recorded career highs in RBI (124), hits (203), triples (12), stolen bases (37), slugging percentage (.522), and batting average (.342).
Wright had a prosperous career in the Negro Leagues but was never able to make it to the Major Leagues.
The year’s top rookie was Mike Piazza.
Mike Piazza was unanimously chosen as the 1993 National League Rookie of the Year on this day in Dodgers history.
In that season, he became the first player since Wally Berger of the Boston Braves in 1930 to hit over.300 (.318), more than thirty home runs (35), and have at least one hundred and twelve RBI in a rookie season.
After five Dodgers in a row, Piazza was the second to win Rookie of the Year. In addition to Raul Mondesi (1994), Hideo Nomo (1995), and Todd Hollandsworth (1996), the streak started with Eric Karros in 1992.
The Dodgers appoint a manager
The Dodgers appointed Davey Johnson as their next manager on October 23, 1998. After taking over for Bill Russell, he managed the Dodgers for just two seasons, with a record of 163–161.
Making World Series history
The Dodgers made history in the Fall Classic by fielding a lineup consisting solely of right-handed hitters during the 2018 World Series. They attempted to do so in Game 1 against Chris Sale and the Boston Red Sox, but were unsuccessful as they lost 8–4.
Given the team’s heavy reliance on platoons owing to injuries and uneven play, it was scarcely surprising that the 2018 Dodgers roster would create such World Series history.
