Throughout the ALCS, Adolis Garcia has been the focal point of the Texas Rangers and Houston Astros rivalry. As expected, the Rangers slugger silenced the Astros faithful at Minute Maid Park in Game 6 by hitting a grand slam in the ninth inning, leading his side to a 9-2 victory.
In the ninth inning, the Rangers offense completely destroyed the Astros bullpen. Rafael Montero was on the mound as they loaded the bases with no outs in the inning. Ryne Stanek, a reliever, took his spot. Stanek struck Corey Seager in the foot, scoring a run.
Adolis Garcia arrived to the box following an out. The Rangers slugger had been heckled the whole evening, setting the atmosphere for a showpiece finish. Garcia was slapped on the left arm by Jose Abreu during a disagreement two nights prior in Game 5, which resulted in a bench clearing scenario. Abreu intentionally hit a batter, which resulted in a two-game suspension that is still being contested.
Garcia was 0–4 on Sunday prior to the eighth. In the eighth, he had also struck out against Abreu, which elicited wild applause from the home crowd. However, the 30-year-old took the mound with the bases loaded and extended the Rangers’ lead by hitting a 97 mph breaking ball deep into the left field bleachers to end the game.
After the game, Rangers catcher Jonah Heim called the event “justice.”
That, in my opinion, is baseball justice at its best. He kind of puts the game on ice, and they’re booing them the entire time,” Heim remarked.’Free Bryan Abreu’ posters are held by Astros supporters at Adolis Garcia
October intra-divisional rivalries within the state are always expected to be competitive. That was evident on Sunday night as Houston supporters jeered and waved signs that said, “Free Bryan Abreu,” each time Adolis Garcia approached the box. Within 48 hours, the appeal of Abreu’s two-game punishment will be heard.
In the meantime, a decisive game 7 between the two clubs will decide who wins the AL pennant.
