Two of the Los Angeles Dodgers’ most highly anticipated and ranked prospects in the previous ten years were Walker Buehler and Corey Seager, and both players lived up to the great expectations placed on them.
Both players contributed to the Dodgers’ 2020 World Series victory, with Seager taking the lead with an incredible postseason performance that earned him MVP awards for both the World Series and the National League Championship Series.
Unfortunately for the Dodgers, Buehler had to have Tommy John surgery for the second time in his career, which prevented him from playing in the postseason in 2022 and 2023. Seager, meanwhile, left in free agency after the 2021 season to sign a 10-year, $325 million contract with the Texas Rangers.
However, Seager has continued to put up strong work, and his best regular season to date helped the Rangers go to the American League Championship Series in 2023.
As one of baseball’s most astute pitchers, Buehler expressed his admiration for his former teammate’s abilities at the plate via Just Baseball Fans on YouTube:
“He is an incredibly gifted individual.” disciplined, methodical, and aware of his objectives. One of the intriguing things, in my opinion, is how frequently we see him swing 0-0. I once spoke with someone about this and they said that after 0-0, he’s one of the most disciplined hitters in the game. However, he strikes out on roughly 98% of strikes when the score is 0-0. I wouldn’t say he’s not the same hitter—he’s still uncanny—but his strategy is very different if you can get past 0-0. He won’t swing if you don’t throw him strikes.
In 18 postseason games in 2020, Seager hit.328/.425/.746 with eight home runs, 20 RBI, 20 runs scored, and a 203 wRC+. He hit five home runs in seven games and drove in eleven runs in the 2020 NLCS alone.
In 2023, he tied his career high of 33 home runs, which he also did in his first season with the Rangers, and completed the regular season batting.327/.390/.623 with a 169 wRC+.
LCS history was created by Corey Seager
In Game 4 of the ALCS, the Rangers were tied at two games apiece despite being blown out by the Houston Astros, but in the third inning, Seager hit a home run to equalize the score.
After hitting a home run in the NLCS as well as the ALCS, Seager made MLB history as the first shortstop to do so.
With two more in 2021, he now has eight home runs in LCS play, seven of which have come for the Dodgers. Over 70 postseason games, Seager has hit 15 home runs in total.
