Terry Stotts, the assistant coach for the Bucks, is leaving his position, a few days after an altercation involving him and head coach Adrian Griffin that was witnessed by the squad.
Although Stotts served as an assistant coach for the Bucks from 1998 to 2002 and as head coach for portions of two seasons from 2005 to 2007, his tenure in that position was limited to four months.
The Athletic has firsthand information about an incident involving Stotts and Griffin that occurred during a shootaround on Tuesday in Oklahoma City.
“NBA insider Shams Charania wrote that Griffin ended the shootaround and called the team together for a huddle to close out the day and let the players get to post-shootaround shooting drills, according to sources who witnessed Tuesday’s events.” “Griffin told the coaches during the huddle that he would like to meet with them separately once they concluded things.
“After the players and coaches broke up the huddle, Stotts started approaching the players to talk about the offense rather than going toward the coaches’ huddle. Stotts tried to strike up a conversation with Giannis Antetokounmpo and Lillard, but Griffin summoned him into the coaching huddle. Griffin yelled at Stotts to come into the coaches’ huddle after Stotts requested some alone time with the players. According to those sources, the incident happened in front of the entire crew.
Griffin told the reporters that it was shocking and that Stotts would be departing the club immediately following practice on Thursday.
Griffin remarked, “Of course, it caught us all off guard, but again, you just support him.” He was a great man. He taught me a lot of things in a short amount of time. He was exceptionally skilled in his field. We simply need to accept the decision he made, which was a personal one.
When questioned about Stotts’ reason for departing, Griffin said, “You’re going to have to ask Terry.” Great coach that he is. It was a lot of fun getting to know him. Fantastic individual. He made the choice. All I can do is wish him well.
With three separate NBA teams over his 13-year career as head coach, including a nine-season tenure with the Blazers, Stotts has extensive coaching expertise.
