Jayson Tatum, the rising star of the Boston Celtics, owes much of his success to his parents, Justin Tatum and Brandy Cole-Barnes. From high school to college and now in the NBA, they’ve been his unwavering support system.
Jayson’s story begins at Saint Louis University, where his parents, Justin and Brandy, welcomed him into the world on March 3, 1998. Despite eventually parting ways, Jayson was a constant presence in both of his parents’ lives. He’d tag along with his mother, Brandy, to her classes at the University of Missouri–St. Louis, and when his father, Justin, played college basketball at Saint Louis University, Jayson would often find himself in the locker room, soaking in the pre-game speeches.
While growing up, Jayson’s close bond with his mother was evident. He once described Brandy as his “best friend” and proudly declared himself a “mama’s boy.”
However, the relationship with his father was more complex. Jayson was primarily raised by his mother while his father pursued a professional basketball career in the Netherlands, visiting his son during breaks. Justin’s coaching methods were notably tough, and their relationship was basketball-centric, leaving little room for typical father-son bonding activities. Jayson admits that he missed out on a traditional father-son relationship but appreciates the “tough love” that toughened him both on and off the court.
Justin Tatum’s basketball background was influential. He played basketball at Christian Brothers College High School, where he also encountered former NBA star Larry Hughes, who would later become Jayson’s godfather.
Justin then played college basketball at Saint Louis University before transitioning into coaching. His coaching journey has included stints at various schools and hosting youth camps to nurture young talent.
