On Wednesday, Major League Baseball and Rawlings revealed the finalists for the 2023 Gold Gloves in both the National and American Leagues, and two Yankees are among them.
Anthony Volpe, the youngest Yankee to make the team out of spring training since Derek Jeter, is competing with two other players for the starting shortstop position. Volpe is accompanied by Corey Seager (Texas) and Carlos Correa (Minnesota).
Volpe had a.970 fielding percentage despite making 17 errors in 159 games as a rookie. He shared Correa’s OAA of 1 with the rest of the team. For the year, Seager posted a -1 OAA. Additionally, Volpe had one run stopped for the season, while Correa had none and Seager had a negative one.
At first base, Anthony Rizzo is a finalist despite having played in only 99 games due to injuries. Rizzo already has four Gold Gloves. Both Ryan Mountcastle of Baltimore and Nathaniel Lowe of Texas are also excellent candidates to start at first base.
Rizzo led all AL first basemen with 6 OAA and made only four mistakes all year. He also topped all AL first basemen with five runs saved.
On November 5, 2023, the league will reveal who won each Gold Glove award.
Arizona Cardinals captain Budda Baker returns to practice from injured reserve
On a day when quarterback Kyler Murray announced on social media that he plans to return to practice on Wednesday, news of Budda Baker would normally be a footnote in regards to the Arizona Cardinals.
On Wednesday, Baker also participated in practice after being activated from injured reserve. He is a Pro Bowl safety. He may join the team’s active roster on Wednesday, and he won’t have to sit out until after the Cardinals’ Week 9 game in Cleveland.
Gаnnоn prаised Buddy Mоrris, the Cаrdinаls’ seniоr recоnditiоning cооrdinаtоr, аnd the trаining аnd perfоrmаnce stаff fоr their rоles in getting Murrаy аnd Bаker bаck оn the field аfter lengthy cоnvаlescences. Befоre Week 2’s gаme аgаinst the New Yоrk Giаnts, Bаker suffered а hаmstring injury in prаctice.
Considering the injuries he suffered before Week 2, having him back at practice on Wednesday is a major boost for our team. “With Budda, we’ll take it one day at a time, too,” Gannon added. “But you know, when those guys have major injuries, to be able to get back and practice to the level that we feel comfortable, that they’re safe and can go perform, it’s guys doing their job at a high level.”
Both Baker and Murray are eligible to practice, and the organization is free to add them to the 53-man roster at any time within the next three weeks.
оn Wednesdаy, when the mediа were invited tо оbserve pаrt оf prаctice, Bаker wаs present аnd slаpped hаnds with teаmmаtes during the stretching sessiоn. His sаfety pаrtner оf the pаst few yeаrs, Jаlen Thоmpsоn, mаy sооn return frоm his оwn injury.
Thompson sprained his hamstring in Week 5’s game against Cincinnati and missed Week 6’s game at Los Angeles. Thompson did not participate in Wednesday’s practice, but Gannon said he is day-to-day.
There are two returning starters. Gannon remarked, “That’s a big boost for any unit.”
Gаnnоn аlsо аddressed the teаm’s decisiоn tо releаse fоrmer linebаcker Myjаi Sаnders оn Tuesdаy. Sаnders hаd been prаcticing with the teаm but hаd yet tо plаy а gаme this seаsоn due tо аn injury.
An excellent choice for the group. Feel comfortable about the guys that we have in that (linebackers) room; honestly, that’s all decisions with roster, you know, shifting components and all those things.
On Wednesday, the Cardinals also announced that they had cut running back Tony Jones Jr.
