It’s possible that the New York Yankees will trade away one of their seasoned players during the winter.
The Big Apple has its hands full. That’s putting it mildly. New York’s fans had great hopes for the upcoming 2023 season, with some even picking the team to win the World Series. That plan didn’t work out. However, because to numerous injuries and erratic play, the Yankees won only 82 games this season.
This offseason will bring quite significant changes. Hal Steinbrenner, the owner of the Yankees, has already made it obvious that the team’s roster will look different next season. According to Phillip Martinez of SNY, longtime catcher Kyle Higashioka may end up playing for another team in 2024.
“Simply put, Higashioka, while a clubhouse fixture and a beloved member of the organization, has not put up the offensive production to warrant a spot on the team,” said Martinez. If Jose Trevino continues to make progress in his recovery, the Yankees should give Austin Wells every opportunity to prove that they can hit with power from behind the plate.
“Of course, Trevino will likely be the everyday catcher with Wells being the backup and designated hitter at times, but that should be suffice for the Yankees heading into 2024.”
Although Higashioka has been a member of the Yankees’ major – roster since 2017, it appears that he will not be retained for the 2024 season. New York boasts All-Star Jose Trevino and promising rookie Austin Wells on the roster, and they’ll likely play them both frequently. Since being selected in the seventh round of the 2008 Major League Baseball June Amateur Draft, Higashioka has been a reliable component of the team, but it now appears that his days in pinstripes may be numbered.
