The MLB Conference Series will kick off on October 15. It would be an understatement to say that the postseason has been full of shocks so far
After recording the best team slugging percentage in league history, the Atlanta Braves were destroyed by the Phillies in the NLDS. The Dodgers were defeated by the D-Backs, who are said to be a group of rookies, and Clayton Kershaw was assigned one of the worst starting lineups in MLB postseason history.
Fans are now anticipating watching the Conference Series amongst the four remaining clubs. The Diamondbacks will take on the Phillies in the National League, and the Rangers and Astros will square off in the ALCS.
Fans’ opinions of the league’s most recent power rankings were divided when it was revealed. The Houston Astros and the Philadelphia Phillies, who faced each other in the 2017 World Series, are at the top of the list. But unlike the Rangers and Diamondbacks, no team is unbeaten in the 2023 postseason.
Trea Turner, Nick Castellanos, Brandon Marsh, and Bryce Harper combined for six Phillies home runs against the Atlanta Braves in Game 3 of the NLDS. The Phillies set an MLB postseason record for single-game home runs when Harper and Castellanos both hit two home runs.
Although both the Phillies and the Diamondbacks have blasted 13 home runs thus far in the postseason, neither club has been the top offensive unit. The Texas Rangers, who lead MLB postseason clubs in nearly every hitting category, deserve the distinction. The Rangers should be ranked higher, in the opinion of many, especially with ace Max Scherzer’s impending return from the IL.
The Phillies have been the best team in the postseason in terms of pitching. Aces like Zack Wheeler and Aaron Nola, together with a strong bullpen, have kept batters guessing with a combined ERA of just 1.53 over 53 innings.
There are only so many upsets in this era of MLB power rankings.
Even though the final four baseball clubs are among the best in the league, the 2023 postseason has taught us that picking winners is still a risky endeavor. It stands to reason that the reigning champion Houston Astros would win, but the Rangers have also been amazing. Dismissing the youthful Arizona Diamondbacks versus the seasoned Phillies in the NL could be dangerous. In either case, as 2023 approaches its peak, we are in for a wild trip.
