Clint Irwin, the backup goalie for Minnesota United, watched an episode of a show that he has been a fan of ever since he was a young adult, right before the team’s game at home against FC Dallas on the previous Sunday.

“I’ve seen it before,” said the player, “but to see it in an NBA playoff Game 7 was pretty cool.”

Since they were students in middle school and high school in Charlotte, North Carolina, together, his boyhood friend Steph Curry has been on that show.

This time, his childhood pal scored a postseason career-high 50 points to help Golden State win Sacramento 4-3 in a first-round, best-of-seven series. His performance was the highest points ever scored in a Game 7 in the history of the NBA. As a result of their success, the Warriors will now face LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers in the second round of the playoffs.

Going into the game on Saturday night in Los Angeles, that series was knotted 1-1 going into the game.

Since Irwin was mostly responsible for setting screens for Curry, the son of Charlotte Hornets shooter Dell Curry, Curry has added a lot of muscle to his frame. The four-time NBA champion and two-time Most Valuable Player of the League award winner hasn’t changed all that much in spite of the passage of time.

“He doesn’t look like he’s aged at all,” Irwin, who is 34 years old, remarked of Curry, who is 35 years old. “He has consistently presented himself in this manner. As a person and a player, he was the same as what you see now: just really skilled, an excellent shooter, and a wonderful teammate.

Now, Curry is considered the best shooter in NBA history. He is a three-point dаnger that appears to have no limits, and his 3,390 made threes during the regular season are the most in the league by a margin of at least 400 and are still counting. Additionally, he has 21,712 points, which places him 43rd on the all-time scoring record for the league.

Curry was the most talented player on both the middle school and high school teams at Charlotte Christian School. He was a point guard who prioritized passing over shooting and was able to see all of the passing possibilities. In addition, he participated in the sports of golf, baseball, and track and field.

“He could have probably gone for 40 points in high school every night if he really wаnted to,” said Irwin, who is a year younger than Steph and a year older than Steph’s brother, Brooklyn Nets guard Seth Curry. “He could have gone for probably 40 points in high school every night,” said Irwin. However, he was adamant that each and every person participate.

Because he was so selfless and because we had a solid squad, we had to actively urge him to take more shots. We had six or seven more me𝚗 who played at the Division I level, and we had a couple guys who ended up playing in Europe.

“My basketball career peaked in middle school, so I was like a sixth man: defend, rebound.”

Steph Curry attended a nearby liberal arts institution, Davidson, which competed in the same conference as Elon University, where Irwin played soccer. However, major Division I universities did not offer him a scholarship to go.

“He would come to our 900-seat gym, put up 40 points and the crowd went crаzy,” according to Irwin.

In the 2008 NCAA tournament, Curry guided Davidson to a spot in the tournament’s Elite Eight. His midmajor Wildcats were ranked 10th, and he scored 40 points in his team’s first-round victory over Gonzaga, 30 points in their victory over Georgetown, 33 points in their victory over Wisconsin in the Sweet 16, and 25 points in his team’s regional final defeat to the No. 1 seed and eventual national champion Kansas. Kansas went on to win the national championship.

The Final Four are separated by just one victory.

“I never understood why this guy didn’t get recruited by the Dukes, the North Carolinas,” according to Irwin. “So, they are the major colleges in the ACC, right? When we went to a tournament, he was the best player there, so why weren’t they pounding on this guy’s door and trying to get him signed up for more competitions? He shown during his time at Davidson that he would have an effect no matter what level of competition he participated in.

Similar to how Division I teams felt, NBA teams were concerned about Stephen Curry’s strength. Golden State was ecstatic when the Timberwolves selected Ricky Rubio and Jonny Flynn back-to-back just before him because it was precisely because of that worry that they chose to take him seventh in the 2009 draft.

After his rookie agreement expired, ankle issues prevented him from signing a lucrative deal, but that merely slowed him down on the path to greatness.

“Did I think he’d be the MVP of the league and one of the best shooters of all time?” Irwin questioned. “I really can’t sаy for sure that I witnessed that. On the other hand, it was pretty obvious to me that this man was going to end up in the NBA at some point. I had the impression that he would be more like his father, who was an expert marksman who was also skilled in other areas.

When Irwin was playing for the Raptors in Toronto many years ago, Curry took Irwin out to dinner, and Irwin later attended a Warriors shootaround in Denver when he was playing for the Nuggets. Before the start of this season, the Loons made Irwin a free agent signing.

“He’s very gracious with his time, but once you get to that level, there’s a lot going on,” according to him. People are interested in seeing him perform. In his own unique way, he has fundamentally changed the way the game is played. People enjoy cheering for the underdog, and he fits that mold perfectly.
