The two-way phenom Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Angels has been selected as a finalist for the American League’s 2023 Hank Aaron Award. Ohtani is one of nine finalists in the AL for the Hank Aaron Award, which is given to the best overall offensive player in each league.
Although Ohtani was unanimously selected as the AL Most Valuable Player in 2021, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. of the Toronto Blue Jays and Bryce Harper of the Philadelphia Phillies shared the National League MVP title that year. Ohtani was a finalist for that award as well.
Manny Ramirez and Sammy Sosa were the inaugural recipients of the Hank Aaron Award in 1999. The Angels have won it twice before, in 2014 and 2019 with Mike Trout winning it both times.
Seven of the nine AL finalists this season—two from the Houston Astros, three from the Texas Rangers, and one each from the Angels and Seattle Mariners—came from the AL West, which dominated the nominations list this season.
The winners of the award will be announced during the World Series.
