Three Cincinnati Reds make MLB All-Rookie Team

In 2023, the Cincinnati Reds witnessed the emergence of several rookies who made significant contributions to the team. While their performances varied, overall, they showcased commendable skills. This week, Baseball America recognized three of these rookies by including them in their All-Rookie team for 2023.

Matt McLain earned recognition as the team’s second baseman, despite not playing the entire season at that position. He appeared in 37 games at second base, 53 games at shortstop, and four games as the designated hitter. Unfortunately, an oblique injury cut his season short in the final month. Despite playing fewer than 100 games, McLain managed to accumulate an impressive 3.7 WAR. He displayed versatility on both offense and defense, hitting .290/.357/.507 with a combination of average and power. He also showcased his baserunning skills, stealing 14 bases and exhibiting sound baserunning instincts. Furthermore, McLain contributed positively to the team’s defense, particularly up the middle.

Spencer Steer, unlike McLain, spent the entire season with the big league club, having already made a brief appearance with the Reds in 2022. In 2023, he participated in 156 games for Cincinnati, showcasing his versatility by playing various positions such as first base, third base, left field, second base, and right field. Although primarily recognized as the designated hitter on the All-Rookie team, Steer only had six games in that role. He demonstrated his offensive prowess by hitting .271/.356/.464 with 37 doubles, 3 triples, 23 home runs, and 86 RBIs. Additionally, he showcased his speed on the basepaths, successfully stealing 15 bases out of 18 attempts.

Andrew Abbott’s journey to the major leagues began in Double-A Chattanooga at the start of the 2023 season. However, his talent quickly propelled him to Triple-A Louisville after just three starts. By the beginning of June, Abbott received the call-up to Cincinnati, solidifying his spot in the rotation. As a left-handed starter, he made 21 starts for the Reds, amassing 109.1 innings pitched and recording a 3.87 ERA. Abbott’s pitching prowess was highlighted by his ability to accumulate 120 strikeouts while issuing 44 walks. His performances earned him a respectable 2.7 WAR.

The recognition of Matt McLain, Spencer Steer, and Andrew Abbott on Baseball America’s All-Rookie team for 2023 is a testament to their individual achievements and their contributions to the Cincinnati Reds’ success.
