The Max Scherzer mythology is still expanding. On September 12th, he suffered what many thought would be a season-ending injury. The future Hall of Famer has persisted in his rehabilitation and preparation, refusing to declare the season over in hopes of making a comeback to the mound this season for the Texas Rangers.
Before Game 2 against the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday, Scherzer threw a bullpen session and said he felt fine. He also hinted that he might pitch again in the future. For Rangers supporters, who would love to have Scherzer as the playoffs go on, the bullpen work on Wednesday seemed to be at a higher level than in prior sessions.
According to Tyle Kepner of The Athletic, Scherzer was upbeat about the way things were going after the game on Wednesday. While many guys his age and with his stature would have given up for the year, he keeps working hard and trying to find ways to help the cause.
“I’m turning a corner and seeing a path based on today. It’s never certain.”
Scherzer MaxAnother positive development is that Scherzer will now conduct live batting practice on Friday, as reported by Buster Olney. While it may seem implausible that Scherzer would be on the ALDS roster, one thing we have all learned about him is that you should never rule him out.
As the Rangers advance farther and farther in the postseason, there appears to be growing momentum behind Scherzer’s potential to pitch in some form.
