Golden State Warriors standout Stephen Curry stirred up some controversy when he boldly asserted that he is the greatest point guard of all time, even surpassing the legendary Magic Johnson.
Unsurprisingly, the old guard of basketball quickly rushed to defend their legacies, with none other than Michael Jordan staunchly rejecting Curry’s assertion. However, Curry remains unruffled by the dissenting opinions of two of the hardwood’s all-time greats.
In a conversation with Whitney Sandretto of 95.7 The Game, the Warriors’ star conceded that the question of the greatest point guard is unanswerable due to the limitations of human experience. Since time only moves forward, there is simply no way to objectively bridge different eras and definitively determine the best floor general of all time.
“The unsolvable debate, that’s why everybody loves to talk about it. I can say I’m the best, and Magic can defend his position, and any other point guard can chime in. It’s the beautiful thing about basketball and the eras,” remarked Curry.
Despite firmly believing in his position as the greatest player in his position, thanks to his transformative style and his ability to elevate his team through gravity and selflessness, Curry holds deep respect for the legends who paved the way for him, including Magic Johnson.
“If you’re in that conversation, no matter what era you’re from, no matter what your style of play was, whatever it is, if you’re in that conversation, then it’s a job well done,” Curry continued. “I’m still obviously adding to [my legacy], and that’s what I love about the conversation.”
Should Stephen Curry clinch his fifth championship ring, even the staunchest traditionalists may have to acknowledge that the Warriors’ star could indeed be the greatest point guard to have ever graced the hardwood, even if his style defies convention.
