The greatest NBA players compete with their place in history year after year. Things like winning several rings, transcending the sport, and what ring culture is all about are explained through titles. Unquestionably, Stephen Curry fits into that category after his Golden State Warriors changed the game of basketball.
Regarding Curry, there is already good reason to question where he stands in terms of history and whether he is the best player of his generation. As of right now, the point guard owns four NBA championship rings, two MVP awards from the regular season—one unanimous and the other from the Finals versus the Boston Celtics two years ago.
Is he competent? Not for Magic Johnson, his most formidable rival in that ranking. Another one of those old-school geniuses who stands up for his own against newcomers is the legendary player of the Lakers.
In an interview with Zach Gelb on CBS Sports Radio, Magic declared, “Okay, so, if he got more than five championships, if he got more than three Finals MVPs, and three league MVPs, then he’s the greatest.”
“He’s the best if he surpasses these records: Top 1 in assists in the Finals, No. 2 in double-doubles [in the playoffs and Finals], Top 1 in triple-doubles in the NBA playoffs, and No. 4 in steals in the playoffs.
He’s the best if he has more than all of those qualities, but as of the last time I looked, he doesn’t.”
What is Curry’s opinion? There is no doubt about it—he values magic. He selected Shaquille O’Neal, Tim Duncan, Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, and the legendary Lakers player Michael Jordan for his perfect quintet. However, he still has a lot left in his career and will be able to increase his numbers once again.
