Magic Johnson has never considered buying into another NBA franchise because of his devotion to the Los Angeles Lakers.
If any team could change his mind, it would be the New York Knicks.
“I think it would be intriguing,” Johnson said on Tuesday. If I had to pick one team, it would be the New York Knicks.
Johnson, a part of the new ownership group for the Commanders, flew into New York from Washingtоn, where he had spent Sunday watching his NFL team lose to the Buffalo Bills. He was scheduled to speak at a local YMCA.
When he gets back to Los Angeles, he’ll be ready for the postseason debut of his Dodgers. The Basketball Hall of Famer has had numerous chances to become a business owner in his chosen field, but has consistently declined.
To avoid playing against the Lakers, Johnson said he turned down offers from the Golden State Warriors, the Detroit Pistons, and the Atlanta Hawks. However, the Knicks bring a new dimension to the table.
To The Associated Press, Johnson said, “I think because of the way fans love basketball you might have to think about that one.” Johnson added that he enjoyed coming to New York and attending Knicks games at Madison Square Garden. I enjoy spending time with Knicks supporters because they are knowledgeable and enthusiastic about their club. I’d have to give that one some thought, as they are obviously astute basketball aficionados. Except for that one exception, I don’t see myself ever joining another franchise.
Having served as the Lakers’ president of basketball operations for two seasons before resigning in 2019, Johnson stated that he has not discussed the concept with Madison Square Garden Executive Chairman James Dolan and is not searching for an opportunity.
Johnson would listen to the conversation if it ever took place.
As a minority owner, “that one you would really have to think about,” he advised. “But other than that, I would just stay with the Lakers, and even with my role now, just being a fan,” he said, “I’m happy just doing that with the Lakers, because, again, I bleed purple and gold.”
Johnson, who was in control when the Lakers acquired LeBron James, is certain that his team can compete for another NBA championship in the next five years.
“I think they’re going to be the best team in the West this year,” Johnson said.
