Hunter Renfroe, an outfielder, was released by the Cincinnati Reds, the team said. The team designated him for assignment earlier this week. The Reds released Renfore after his waiver claim went uncontested.
On August 31st, Cincinnati claimed Hunter Renfroe off waivers from the Los Angeles Angels. In the American League West, where most venues are pitcher-friendly, he had been hitting for power but not much average or reaching base-running positions. The Reds probably anticipated that he would gain more power once he arrived at Great American Ball Park.
That was not the case. Renfroe failed to hit for power, with only one extra-base hit (a home run) in 44 plate appearances. He also failed to get on base. Renfroe played in 14 games during his first little more than three weeks with the team. Nine of the games would see him start, and the remaining four would see him on the bench. During his stint with the Reds, the outfielder amassed five hits and five walks. For those of you who didn’t want to check it up yourselves (that’s why you’re here, right?) that was good for a.128 batting average, a.227 on-base percentage, and a.205 slugging percentage.
It made sense from the Reds’ point of view to give it a try and see what happened. This is an instance of how things simply don’t work out. After 2.5 weeks, the club decided to end the move. Perhaps the Cincinnati front staff would have been ready to give him more time to see if he could break out of his rut if this had happened earlier in the season. However, the Reds only had two weeks left in the regular season, and during those two weeks, there wasn’t much room for error as the team sought to secure a playoff spot.
