Real Madrid might look to sign 34-year-old Gabonese striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Ligue 1 club Marseille in January
According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is the subject of interest from Real Madrid. The Merengues are contemplating entering the market for a striker in the January transfer window. And the 34-year-old Marseille forward is one of the options on their radar.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has seen his career spiralling out of control in the last two years. This time in the 2021/22 season, the Gabonese striker was the Arsenal captain and on top of the world. He had also won the Premier League Golden Boot. But his stock quickly dropped before Mikel Arteta banished him from the first-team squad.
The 34-year-old joined Barcelona in January 2022 and ended the campaign as the club’s joint-top scorer despite only spending a few months at Camp Nou. But Aubameyang’s spell with Barcelona ended after just six months, with Chelsea snapping him up last summer. However, the experienced striker’s stock did not rise again.
The former Arsenal captain was a shell of his dominant self at Stamford Bridge and failed to find the back of the net regularly. So, it was hardly surprising that Chelsea wanted to offload him in the summer transfer window. And Ligue 1 club Marseille secured Aubameyang’s services this past summer.
But Aubemayang’s return to France has not been fruitful, as he has failed to score a single Ligue 1 goal in five outings. But despite his struggles, the 34-year-old has captured the attention of a high-profile club. And the report claims that Real Madrid will look to sign the Marseille striker in the January transfer window.
Real Madrid lost Mariano Diaz and Karim Benzema in the summer transfer window but replaced them with only one striker — Joselu. While the Spaniard has done well for Los Blancos, they can still do with another centre-forward. So, Aubameyang has emerged as a candidate to bolster the Real Madrid attack in January.
But investing in the 34-year-old might not be a sensible decision by Real Madrid despite his previous success with Barcelona. Nonetheless, it will be interesting to see if the Merengues pursue Aubameyang’s signature this coming winter.
