September 16 – In the first game of a three-game interleague series, the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the host Seattle Mariners 6-3 thanks to a two-run home run by Miguel Rojas.
For the Dodgers (89-57), who reduced their required points to two in order to win the National West League championship for the tenth time in the previous eleven years, J.D. Martinez also drove in two runs, and James Outman added a solo shot in the ninth inning.
The Mariners (81-66), who had a two-game winning streak ended and missed a chance to gain position in the American League West when both Houston and Texas lost, were helped by Eugenio Suarez’s home run. For the third and final wild-card playoff spot in the AL, Seattle continued to lead Toronto by a half-game.
Bobby Miller, a rookie for the Dodgers (10-3), went 5 2/3 innings to win. The right-hander struck out seven batters while giving up three runs on six hits and two walks.
For his 23rd save of the year, Evan Phillips pitched the ninth inning.
George Kirby, a right-hander for the Mariners, (10-10) received the loss after throwing six innings and allowing four runs on five hits, two walks, and seven strikeouts.
Suarez’s single blast down the left field line with one out in the bottom of the fourth inning gave the Mariners the lead.
Jason Heyward singled to right field to start the top of the fifth, and two outs later, Rojas lined a high fastball narrowly over the left field wall and into the opposing bullpen, giving the Dodgers the lead.
In the sixth inning, the Dodgers increased their advantage to 4-1 when Will Smith was hit by a pitch with one out and came around to score on Max Muncy’s triple to the right field corner. To bring Muncy home, Martinez lined a single to center.
In the bottom of the inning, the Mariners cut the deficit to one run. In the opening move, Julio Rodriguez singled to the left. Both runners advanced following a walk to Cal Raleigh thanks to a wild pitch. Rodriguez was brought home by Teoscar Hernandez’s single to the left, which also moved Raleigh to third. Raleigh was scored by Suarez after he grounded into a double play to make it 4-3.
In the eighth inning, the Dodgers scored another run when Freddie Freeman was struck by a pitch to begin the frame. Following catcher Raleigh’s throwing error, Freeman stole second and advanced to third before scoring on Martinez’s single to right with two outs.
