Magic number for the Dodgers to win the National League West

For the 10th time in 11 years, the Dodgers are on the verge of taking home the National League West title. Los Angeles is edging out the Diamondbacks and Giants in what was a competitive battle at the All-Star break.

Eight of their thirteen meetings with Arizona ended in victories for the Dodgers, including all five of their games in August to wrap out the season series. Los Angeles now has the divisional tiebreaker advantage against the D-backs. Despite playing each other seven times in the last 11 days of the season, the Dodgers have dropped four of their last six games to the Giants.

There’s a good likelihood that by then the division will have already been settled.

Following are the standings as of Tuesday, September 12, in addition to Wednesday’s games between the Giants and D-backs:

NHL West standingsDodgers 88-56,.611 The D-backs won 76–71 (.517). 13½ GBGiants win 75–71 (.514) 14 GB

The Dodgers need four wins to win the division.

The Dodgers just need to tie the D-backs to win the division because they defeated Arizona in the season series, which suggests a magic number of just three. The D-backs and Giants, though, both have the same number of losses. And for a while, things were complicated by the potential for a three-way tie at the top of the division.

San Francisco is 10-7 (.588), Los Angeles is 10-9 (.526), and Arizona is 10-14 (.417) in games against the Dodgers, D-backs, and Giants. In the event if the Dodgers utterly crumble, the Giants, who still have two games left against the D-backs in addition to their remaining seven games against the Dodgers, may still prevail in a three-team tiebreaker.

Time on Thursday: 1:10 p.m. PT: Giants vs. Rockies 5:40 p.m.: D-backs vs. Mets

If the Dodgers won the National League West, it would be their second consecutive division crown and tenth in the previous eleven years. In this stretch, they won the division every year except for 2021, when Los Angeles won 106 games. The Braves (14 seasons, 1991-2005) and Yankees (13 seasons, 1995-2007) hold the longest postseason streaks in major league history, with the Dodgers now sitting in third place.

The earliest the Dodgers may possible win the NL West is Friday, September 15, based on the schedule.
