After defeating the Toronto Blue Jays 6-3 on Tuesday at Rogers Centre, the Rangers won their fourth straight game and gained a lead over them in the American League Wild Card race.
Texas (80-64) has a half-game advantage over Toronto (80-65) for the second of the three Wild Card positions. The Rangers secured a postseason head-to-head tiebreaker with the Blue Jays with the victory.
Bruce Bochy, the Rangers manager, stated that his team has been playing better baseball. “Getting hits at the right time is good.”
The Rangers and Blue Jays are two games ahead of the Seattle Mariners, who faced the Angels late on Tuesday. They would fall 1.5 games behind if they lost.
The Rangers led 2-0 after Robbie Grossman’s two-run homer in the fourth inning. A sacrifice fly by Jonah Heim scored one run in the sixth inning, then doubles by Leody Taveras, Josh Smith, and Corey Seager added two more runs to make the score 5-0.
In the seventh inning, the Blue Jays scored two runs: one against Leclerc and one against Brock Burke. Cavan Biggio singled in the opening run and eventually came around to score on a groundout.
In the ninth inning, Davis Schneider hit a home run off Aroldis Chapman to cut Toronto’s deficit to 5-3, but Chapman then struck out Craig Biggio and got Santiago Espinal to fly out to conclude the game.
Bochy praised Seager as one of the best players he had ever had. “You always enjoy watching top athletes perform their duties, and he never stops. He is simply incredibly talented and committed to his craft.
