In a remarkable display of power hitting, Matt Olson added to his MLB-leading home run tally in the second game of a day-night doubleheader against the Phillies on Monday night. The Atlanta Braves’ first baseman now sits just one homer short of matching the franchise record set by Andruw Jones in 2005.
During the game, Olson crushed a three-run homer with two outs in the third inning, courtesy of a pitch from Michael Lorenzen. He continued his home run barrage by leading off the sixth inning with an opposite-field shot against the Phillies’ starting pitcher. This impressive performance marked his 21st career multihomer game and his eighth such feat this year.
In addition to his home run prowess, Olson leads all of MLB with 127 RBIs, placing him just eight RBIs away from tying the Braves’ modern franchise record established by Eddie Mathews back in 1953. The Atlanta season record for RBIs is held by Gary Sheffield, who drove in an impressive 132 runs in the 2003 season.
